UGC has included Hindu Studies as a Subject for the NET examination. The Central Government is planning to open a Center for Hindu Studies in every college and university in India. UNESCO has listed 46 ancient civilizations of the world, of which the Hindu Civilization is not only the earliest but is also the only one that has survived uninterrupted for millennia when all the others have collapsed. Many countries in the world are opening Centers for Hindu Culture and Civilization Studies in their Universities.

Hindu Civilization is no different from Sanatan Civilization or Vedic Civilization and possesses rich sources of knowledge systems capable of addressing and resolving the enormous challenges which our modern world is facing. As many as five million new jobs are expected to be available in the Hindu and Vedic Studies sector in the next few decades.

Program Syllabus

Paper 1 – Sanskrit Bhasha Parichay

Sanskrit is Mother of all the languages. Ancient literature, ancient scripts are in Sanskrit language. Sanskrit language is the foundation of all the IKS fields, therefore learning Sanskrit language is the necessity to have better understanding and Research oriented study of IKS. The Paper is designed with the objective to provide the learner an overview of Sanskrit Bhasha. The scope of this Paper is very large that it is not possible to cover it in detail, but with an overview and further detailed study, the learner can interpret the Sanskrit text.

Paper 2 – Hindu Way of Life

There is no Hinduism as western scholars coined it while vainly trying to squeeze us in the western isms of sectarian religions and compartmentalized ideologies. There is no Hindu religion if by religion we mean a single book, prophet and set of fearing oppressive dictums. It’s rather a way of life: A continuously enlarging tradition of godward endeavor of human spirit. Its ideas of manifestation of Srushti or Universe, purpose of life, Divine and Infinite pervading everything and guiding it from in and out are the central ideas which have made this Hindu way and molded history of this sub continent since millenniums.

Paper 3 – Vedic Literature - 1

The term 'Vedic literature' simply means literature based on or derived from the Vedas. The texts which constitute the Vedic literature are: 1. The four Vedas i.e. Samhitas, 2. the Brahmanas attached to each of the Samhitas, 3. the Aranyakas, and 4. the Upanishads.Veda is the highest authority in Hindu knowledge system and the authority of all other scriptures are based on the authority of the Veda. Vedas are four - Rig, Yajur, Sama and AtharvaRigveda contains prayers to Gods (Riks are the mantras). Yajurveda has methods to use Riks for sacrifices (Yajus-Yajna). Sama Veda introduces musical notes. Atharva Veda gives ways to make life successful, and contains methods to fulfill what can be called material aspirations. The Vedas are known by other epithets, each of which only signify their importance - Apta-Vachan ("Divine Revelation)", Nigama ("Revelation"), Samhitas ("Collection"), Savda-Brahm ("Word of Brahm") or just Shabda ("Word"), Shruti ("Revelation" or "Testimony"), and Stotra ("Hymns.")

An overview of four Vedas and four Upavedasis necessary to understand their essential thought.

Paper 4 – Vedic Literature - 2

The Upanishads normally appear in the last part of Aranyaka and deal with spiritual philosophy. Some Upanishads are exceptions and appear in Samhita and Brahmana too. Thus Upanishad, as it appears in the last part of the Veda, is called Vedanta. There are 108 Upanishads and 10 of them are famous. Since Upanishads mostly philosophical they are found in prose. But there are Upanishads like Taittireeya and Ganapathi Atharva Seersha that have svara.

An overview of The Upanishads, six Vedanga and major sutras form a very crux of Indian Knowledge Systems.

Paper 5 – Hindu History and Puranas

Puranas have been so far considered just as myths. However, it has far more significance in Indian history and culture. It gives chronology of different dynasties, kings, their times, it has complete details from cosmology to pilgrims, from geography to incarnations. Puranas thus have rich treasure of history of India especially her early history, though one needs to understand how to peel it off the outer veil of stories and symbols and enjoy its sweetness at the core.

Paper 6 – Mahakavya - Ramayana and Mahabharata

Ramayana and Mahabharat are not just epics, mahakavyas of India, they in fact represet the entire soul and cultural history of India. They have deep impact on the psyche of every India. Maharishi Valmiki, narrates the life of Rama, a legendary prince of Ayodhya city in Ramayana After his fourteen-year exile to the forest with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, till kidnapping of Seeta, Killing of Ravana and Rama's eventual return to Ayodhya is this story. Ramayana is one of the largest ancient epics in world literature. It consists of nearly 24,000 verses.

Mahabharata is like many layeres, many chambered complex palace, perhaps like its own described Mayasabha. It narrates the story of the Kaurava and the Pāṇḍava and the role played by the Divine AvataraSrikrishna in this struggle. As a  philosophical and devotional material, it has many akkhayana or stories like that of Damayanti, the story of Shakuntala, the story of Pururava and Urvashi, the story of Savitri and Satyavan, the story of Kacha and Devayani, the story of Rishyasringa and even an abbreviated version of the Rāmāyaṇa. It is said that Mahabharat in fact is entire thought, efforts, penance and learning of India.

Paper 7 – Hindu Civilization

The fact that Hindu way of life was not just a great philosophical thought, a pinnacle of human emotion and action, but was rather a conscious and concrete attempt of bringing all that great thought and idea into real life makes it unique human achievement and in that course Hindu Civilization means her external expression of spiritual ideal in sociology, polity, economy, administration and relation with other people, races, continents and perhaps even with other worlds makes it an unparalleled and unbroken experiment as never before.

Paper 8 – Hindu Educational System

Hindu Educational system is in fact another expression of Hindu soul or Chiti.

From prenatal stage ie even before a child is born his or her education starts and it continues till last breath. From home education, to education in family, to education in guild or professionally working unit, to the village schools, temple centered education system, Agraharas, to great Universities was the spread of Hindu education. It used to be education at body, vital, mental, intellectual and spiritual levels, a holistic integral model of human excellence, through self experience and exploration apart from learning through words of masters.

Paper 9   – Study of Dharma

Study of Hindu dharma, starts with understanding the very idea of Dharma and its uniqueness. The idea and ideal behind the Hindu dharma, its major tenets, defining ideas, unique views about purpose and nature of life, its stages and duties, about nature and nurture of individuals and group, and about the ideas and way towards reaching our ultimate goal, aim in life..rituals, puja paddhatis, utsav ( festivals ) systems, customs, beliefs, institutions, dictums, dos and don’ts .. ways to get happiness, to get married, to get livelihood, to withdraw from life, ways to live and right ways to leave body…  all these define Hindu dharma.

Paper 10 – Hindu Philosophy - 1

Hindu Philosophy is  enquiry into the nature of reality , mystery of life, death and existence.

The Shad darshana or the six systems of philosophy areVaishesika, Nyaya, Samkhya, Yoga, PurvaMimansa and Vedanta or Uttara Mimansa. These are
astika schools,  with Vedas as their source and scriptural authority.

Samkhya (Kapila) postulates that everything in reality sprouts from purusha (self, soul or mind) and prakriti (matter, creative agency, energy).Yoga (Patanjali) literally means that which joins and has eight limbs as ashtang Yoga to control body, mind & sense organs and aim is freedom or mukti.
Nyaya (Gautama Muni) gives a technique of logical thinking as believes in perception, inference, comparison, and verbal testimony.

Paper 11 – Hindu Philosophy - 2

Vaisheshika (Kanada) believes that all objects in the physical universe are made from Anu or atom and finite number of atoms construct it, Brahman is the fundamental force that creates consciousness in these atoms.
Purva Mimamsa (Jaimini) encompasses the Nyaya-vaisheshika systems and stresses on the concept of valid knowledge. The Vedas are eternal the fulfillment of duties prescribed by the Vedas is all that religion is for. Vedantaor Uttara Mimamsa, is primarily  the Upanishads. Unorthodox ( Nastika )Schools of Indian Philosophy include Charvaka, Jain and Bauddha.

Paper 12 – Hindu Rituals and Sanskaras

The Samskaras Provide a Framework to Human life. Hindu life is wovwnnealy by sixteen samskaras from the time jeeva is in womb of mother to the time when soul leaves body and the offerings are done to the forefathers. Anything done repeatedly and with concentration has impact on our mind, it makes  our habit, nature and then character. It is an obligatory sacred rite or a religious ceremony. Samskaras are providing meaning, structure, purpose and order to human life.

Paper 13 – Hindu Classical Literature

Among classical literature of India, Kalidas, Bhas, Bhavbhuti,
Kālidāsa are shining not just in Indian literature but even world literature. AbhidnyanShakuntalam(अभिज्ञानशाकुन्तलम्), Kumarsambhav, Raghuvasham, and Meghaduuta by Mahakavi Kalidas are immortal Sanskrit plays. Mricchakatika by ShudrakaSvapnaVasavadattam, Urubhangam by Bhasa, and Ratnavali by Sri Harsha or Gita Govinda by Jayadeva cannot be forgotten. The originality of idea, skilled craftsmanship of plot, overflowing charm and beauty of imagination and forms, and startling insights in human psychology make them still very relevant for humanity.

Paper 14 – Hindu Social Systems

Hindu social system has a unique concept of life as an opportunity to pay back the debt of your gods, parents and teachers (Run sakalpnaa) It is of four ashrams, four purusharthas and four types of human natures making three layers in a matrix and provide a very unique, nowhere else attempted social system for realizing the ultimate aim of human life ie to become godlike, to rise, awake and raise to great height materially and spiritually. From individual to family to clan, to community, to society to state and then to nation is a spiral evolution for Hindus.

Paper 15 – Hindu Temples, Culture and Traditions

Hindu culture is ideas that govern Hindu life. It has Antarang which comprises of its values, ideas, central themes and beliefs, literature, philosophy and psychology. Its Bahirang comprises of rituals, festivals, systems, institutions, social, economic and political fabric. All this is woven with the thread of the Divine, firm faith in eventual evolution of each soul which is potentially divine.

Its not mass of information crammed in human brain that can sustain individual or society, its culture gives absorbs shocks, provides purpose and moulds minds to sustain them especially in the times of testing.

This rootedness in culture and tradition, firm in essence and ever changing in details, also explains the millenniums of history of India which remained alive in spite of thousands of attacks and calamities.

31. How Masters Programs will be useful to various age groups ? Are they beneficial for currently employed people? If yes, then how ?

Ans. :-   Masters Programs offered by Bhishma School of Indian Knowledge Systems will be useful for all age groups and all sectors of the society. Let us understand that as per the New Eductional policy, there will be revolution and radical change in the education system in India. Apart from this, central government is trying to apply all indigenous, ancient and traditional Indian models based on Indian Knowledge Systems in every field and every sector of the society, social life, governance, trade, commerce, agriculture, education, health sector, etc. At the other end, we experience that the so called modern western models are getting defeated and failed around us. E.g. Allopathy does not have solutions for many ultra-modern diseases and Ayurveda has a deep sense preventive health. Another example is multinational companies mislead Indian population about the quality of food and drugs. Pantanjali and Ramdev Baba have created examples which are beneficial not only for Indians but for the whole world. Let us understand that the whole country as a whole is getting ready for revival and transformation as ancient traditional glorious India. People with any age group working in any field can join Masters Programs and convert the knowledge into an opportunity in the next few decades. They will be the change leaders and lead the change happening around us. So you may be working in any government organization, teacher, professor, doctor, lawyer, CA, engineer, architect or graduate degree holder in any field you can think about Masters Programs as a supportive or alternative career. It will enlighten you at the individual level and also will help you to create a change in society in a professional way.

People across the world are very much eager to know about India, its culture, a voyage of civilization, traditions, heritage, etc. Universities in many countries in the world are opening centres for India Study or Centre for Vedic / Hindu Civilization study, etc. There is a global demand for Yog, Ayurved, etc. Now we see that Indian classical music, dance, food, cultural activities are getting popular all over the world. Technology, especially social media is helping for its spread. Indians are getting many higher posts in USA government and USA corporate world as well as many international organizations. Another important benefit is that India is the youngest country in the world. So young Indians will lead and rule the future world. Indians empowered with the foundation of Indian Knowledge Systems and Hindu Studies are having huge career opportunities all over the globe. Besides, you will see that United Nations and other world organizations are talking about the concept of sustainable development and arguing the world to follow it. This concept of sustainable development is the very basis of Indian Knowledge systems and based on Vedic philosophy. Masters Program will help students to become India Scholar, IKS Expert, Hindu Scholar, Hindu Cultural Councellor, Vedic Scholar, Vedic Coach, Kautilya Experts, etc. They all will have global opportunities for next few decades.
